I think that even though it is (good but) not the best way to express this, the filmmakers of Narnia brought back the white witch in the other movies because they don't want us to forget her, and it seems like she's always trying to get back from the dead, so that makes it more obvious that they are having Tilda Swinton as the green witch.
Besides, just why would this new character want to hold the prince captive if it's not the same witch? My dad told me that if a character is important enough, they will introduce them earlier in the story. Well, the witch was so important in LLW, with even her name in the title, that I think Lewis didn't want to just stop her right there.

Um, maybe because she's evil? And wants to take over Narnia, like other evil people have done in the past? Are you going to argue that obviously Rabadash must have been the WW because he was trying to take over Narnia?

If Lewis had wanted to use Jadis in any of the books that take place after LWW, he would have. When it's stated pretty plainly in the book and by the estate that the LotGK is not the WW, then you really can't claim that Lewis intended for people to think the two characters were the same.

Bookwyrm, you are wrong when you say the book states "pretty plainly" that the LotGK and the WW are the same. In fact the book doesnt even say at all that they are not the same.

Lewis had a reason for not saying they are different being in his novel. Do you want to know why?

BECAUSE ITS COMMON SENSE!!! The WHITE Witch died in Lww, and they introduce and EMERALD witch who goes by the lady of the green kirtle.

Of course Lewis wouldnt need to state they are not the same. Because any sane person first reading the book wouldnt come to that conclusion. Now because some grew up reading the misinformation in that one novel and BBC used the same actress, many thought it was what Lewis intended.

I definitely think that they're different. For all the above reasons. LOTGK is a charmer; WW uses force and intimidation. LOTGK is young; the WW is not. LOTGK is much more subtle than the WW, and, for the WW to be LOTGK, someone would have to call her up again!! Plus, the Hag in PC refers to WW as the White Lady, yet LOTGK is the Lady of the GREEN Kirtle. They are so completely different that they shouldn't be the same character; it would mess up the film!

Then there's the whole issue with Tilda Swinton portraying LOTGK. ;)

And I think that you misread Bookwyrm's post, Invisible Woman. You're on the same side- relax!

LOTGK is not young, she just looks young. Rilian says she remembers when the letters were cut, and that she's lived that long because she knows neither age nor death. All the same, I do think it would be better for them to use different actresses.

I don't exactly have a formed opinion on whether or not the White Witch and the Lady of the Green Kirtle are different characters or not, but I voted that someone else should be cast, because I have read that some people would go on strike against the movies if this occurs, and I love the books too much to see them end because of such a decision. For the sake of preventing the disturbance of peace, I think that someone other than Tilda Swinton should be cast to portray the Lady of the Green Kirtle.

Like I said, even if they were the same they should not be played by the same actress. For even if the Lady of the Green Kirtle is the White Witch, she has a different appearance...so if she was the WW, it would only be in spirit not body.

So casting Tilda is out of the question.

I would like to have someone else play the LOTGK. As others have said she's young and beautiful and I am excited to see how they depict this in the movies! :D I think someone besides Tilda Swinton should play the LOTGK

Who Should Play The Lady of the Green Kirtle?

Postby PeterCharn » Oct 05, 2010 11:56 am

I know that in the Narnia Book it says that the Lady of the Green Kirtle is NOT the same individual as the white witch, but that she was the same sort of witch.

I personally believe that Tilda should play the Lady of the Green Kirtle, but they should make her look really different like with dark hair and makeup. Then when they break the spell by breaking the Silver Chair, I think then she should look more like the white witch so that audience know that she was of the same sort of witch and that she used the same time of magic.

I think that Tilda is a brilliant actress and could pull off playing an entirely diferent sort of character.

Or they could just include the line from the Parliament of the Owls in which it was stated that the LotGK was from the same sort as the WW. Any use of Tilda as the LotGK will mean people will assume that the two witches are the same. Besides, we've have her in three movies now. It's time for a change.

I don't see why anyone who thinks it through would think that they are the same.

The WW was not a spirit or even an immortal (until she stole the apple), but a mortal creature like any of us with with great wisdom in the realm of magic. While the SC says the LOTGK was of a divine immortal race(although that could just have been something planted in Rilian's mind)

She was killed and there is no mention in the book of her resurrection besides the failed attempt of Nikabrik. And I don't think Aslan would allow her to be resurrected.

There is no mention of the WW being able to change shapes, while the LOTGK could take the form of a serpent.

The WW was dead in PC which only gives a 50 or 60 year window for her to somehow come alive, wander north, find the caverns, call up the gnomes and build and empire.

And besides that the WW is white and the LOTGK is green.

But then again, in the filmmakers' eyes, we've had the White Witch in three movies so far, we might as well add her into the fourth....

Sadly, you're probably spot on with that point, Trufflehunter. If we make to to LB, I fully expect to see Tilda as Tash. Maybe even as Shift too.

^^ If they did that (and I'm not ruling it out) that would be ridiculous. How many villians can she be? I voted that the WW and LotGK are different. Even if they can be considered the same person, I am so tired of the WW in 3 movies that I do not want to see the same thing again! With the MN and SC, that would be 5 movies she would appear in. Way too much for a villian that died in movie 1.

I think even non-book fans will get annoyed at having the same villian all the time and decide the film makers (and possibly books) are lacking in a variety of ideas and therefore they rehash old ideas over and over again.
