Herne Bay, an old name for Riverwood, NSW,
Riverwood is a Sydney suburb which hated its original name of Herne Bay so much that it, like its neighbour, Dumbleton, was renamed. Dumbleton in World War II, disliked its name so much that it insisted on being renamed Beverley Hills, after the swankier and much more famous Beverley Hills, near Los Angeles in USA. There used to be a shop in our Beverley Hills, where in 1960, my grandmother bought me my new school bag, embossed with my initials, for high school. It was an old fashioned shop, run by someone with accented English. I still wonder if that Beverley Hills luggage shop owner was the Beverley Hills Auschwitz survivor who famously told Thomas Keneally the basics of Schindler's List.
