Well, your cat does leave its tail lying around in traffic areas so that people cannot pass it without treading on its tail occasionally. Should I have fallen over instead, breaking all the crockery I was carrying at the time?

Was it really your muffin? I was clearing out the pantry of any items that have passed their use-by date. It was better I ate the muffin than to leave it to go stale.
