The first eight or nine chapters of FOTR is terribly boring - at least to me - so I had to force myself to keep going. Nothing particularly exciting happened, and when it did, it ended far too quickly. But now that I'm on chapter eleven, I'm liking it much more because it's finally getting exciting and staying that way. I still do think the Narnian books are better though.

Well I can see how the first few could be boring but the books as a whole are not boring....

I haven't gotten through the whole book yet. I've only read up to chapter eleven, so I don't know if the overall book is boring. I only know that the first several chapters are.

Well, finish the whole book before you say it's *shudder :| * boring. LOTR is nothing if not exciting!

Well, the first chapters of FOTR have a lot of narration and discussion. And unlike the movie, the book kinda wanders around.... ;;) At least the movie gets to the POINT. At first, the book is, "We have this terrible Ring. Now what do we do with it?" And suddenly we're starting to get distracted with all the peculiar stuff like Tom Bombadil (which really has no bearing on the story) and Frodo's house in Crickhollow. i-)

But keep reading! It definitely gets better :)

haha i like your interpretation there, Galadriel... ;))

I always skip Tom Bombadil.. i never liked him. I kinda would like to know why Tolkien even put him in there... /:)

Oh yes Archer once you get to Bree it gets really interesting... hehe...Strider... course I'm not biased... ;;)

I voted for Narnia, but I LOVE LOTR!

I said Narnia, mostly because I read those books first (I read LWW when I was 5 years old, but I didn't read The Hobbit until I was 12 years old!)

it was a hard choice because I love both Narnia and LOTR SO much!

SKIP Tom Bombadil?! How can you do that? He is very relevant to the story, because he is a link to the past. He and Treebeard are intertwined (in the movie, Treebeard actually says quite a few of what were Tom's lines in the book) through the forest and their roles as protectors of the trees.

The book starts out with the intro into the story; without it, you really have no idea where Frodo comes from, how he got the Ring in the first place, and who Frodo, Sam, Merry and Pippin are! It introduces you to the idea of the Ring's dangers and how beautiful the Shire is, how simple-minded most hobbits are, and how different the foursome are. Would you build a house without a foundation? No, of course not! And neither should you write a story without an intro!

And Liberty, I love your avie!

Hey guys, just a wee Mod Note...

This thread is for discussing which you prefer and why: LOTR, or CoN. For in depth discussions of LOTR we have a handy topic in SO that you can check out. :)

A decision can never be made as to which story is better, because it is like comparing apples to oranges. The writing styles are so different. But a decision can be made as to which story I like better, and that would be The Lord of the Rings. :)

And even though LOTR wins out for me, it's a close race. I love Narnia dearly. :ymhug:

I voted for Narnia. I started reading LOTR and it was a bit boring. It is a bit too descriptive for me.

I am voting for Narnia as well, as I just don't like Tolkien's writing style. C.S. Lewis had a simple way of describing things that made everything sound grand and exciting, but when Tolkien describes something in simple terms it just sounds "common."

I voted for CoN, and Narnia.

Like De_De said, I started reading it, and I just got bored. Also, LOTR is a bit dark compared to Narnia, if you get what I mean. ;)

yeah there are parts of the lotr books where not much happens, whereas in the CoN it moves very quickly.
But just thinking about the stories alone (and not the movies or how the books are written), I like Lotr a little bit better (I play the lotr onine game every night after all, lol).
Both are the best two fantasy worlds ever created though B-)

Narnia all the way!

LOTR did nothing for me.

I did not find any female character in LOTR that I identified with- to the point that my fave character in it is Gandalf the Grey.

On the other hand, Narnia has Aravis Tarkheena :D
