One thing about VDT- The summer of 1942 was in the middle of the Battle of the Atlantic when the U-boats were sinking record amounts of Allied shipping (my father was a captain on a freighter doing convoy runs.)
Hardly seems the right time to take your teenage daughter on a pleasure cruise to America!

The difference is that people wanted to hear the stories, whereas I never met anyone who wanted to read the essays
