I'm bringing this back up, because even though nothing has been close to being confirmed, I feel like due to the recent success of Avatar, the threat (which is how I look at it) of VDT being converted to 3D is very real.

Warner Bros. announced today that they will be releasing Clash of the Titans, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Guardians of Ga'Hoole, and Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore in 3D. These are all films that were shot/are being shot in regular 2D, and will be converted to 3D in post production. Note that this technique is much different than what was done with Avatar and most other 3D films, which are shot with special 3D cameras. There has been a lot of negative feedback in the past about films that are converted to 3D after the fact, but WB seems to be very pleased with the conversion work done for Clash of the Titans.

Since Avatar has done so well at the box office, studios are really jumping onto the 3D bandwagon. Personally, I don't necessarily believe that Avatar did so well purely on the fact that it was in 3D. Sure the 3D did leaps to make the experience better, but I think audiences are smarter than to go out in hoards to see a movie purely because it is in 3D.

If Clash of the Titans and the 3D conversion experiment proves successful, I'm afraid that other studios will line up to convert their films into 3D, and unfortunately, FOX is notorious for undermining their directors' visions in favor of making films more "marketable," usually to adverse effect (see Kingdom of Heaven, Wolverine, and to some extent Taken).

I kinda hope this doesn't happen but at the same time that it does...

I honestly don't think that Michael Apted will release VotDT in 3D!

I would hope not, but he may not have any say in the matter. If they felt it was a good move, 20th Century Fox might do 3D conversion in post-production without Apted's approval. Hopefully it won't come to that, but I can almost guarantee that the studio has at least considered it.

Yeah the director doesn't really have much say. I imagine it's part of the marketing...

To be honest, i think 3D conversion in post production is possibly the best way to go all round.

One of the biggest problems expressed with regard to 3D so far (on NarniaWeb at least) would be that the movie would become all about the 3D at the expense of the story - that it would incorporate stupid "gimmick" shots where things poke out of the screen (and then seem bizarrely out of place when you watch the 2D dvd at home), or would have scenes which serve no other puprose than to show off the 3D effects. Even Avatar, which i thought was a phenomenal movie experience and pretty much revolutionised the entire concept of 3D movies, was still 100% all about the 3D. As a one-off cinematic experience it was amazing, but i can't think of any reason why i would ever want to buy the movie on DVD and watch it at home on my regular 2D TV.

However, since VDT was developed, scripted and filmed as a 2D movie, then you completely avoid all that. The notion of 3D effects would not have had any influence on any aspect of the production, and no compromises would have been made for the sake of 3D - the focus of the director and his crew would have remained on the movie itself, and not on the idea of incorporating 3D. There would thus be no gimmick shots, and no pointless scenes. In essence, the 2D version of Dawn Treader is and always will be the definitive version of the movie. That can't ever be changed.

So with post-production 3D conversion, the 3D effect basically becomes a bonus on top of the movie, and not the entire core of the movie. It will be something we can all enjoy for the short time the movie is in cinemas (not to mention the financial benefit of releasing in 3D, especially when the trend is "in" right now) but when the movie comes out on DVD we can all rest easy knowing we are still watching the "proper" version of Voyage of the Dawn Treader - that we wont be missing out on a key part of the movie's design concepts, that we wont be missing the core focus of the directors vision, that we wont be left with irrelevant scenes which no longer serve a purpose, and just generally that we won't be watching an inferior version.

3D conversion in post-production seems like the best of both worlds really. Win/Win.

^^I agree. I don't mind if they do it now I just didn't want cheesy shots. I think it also depends how they market it though. Most 3D movies give the feeling of, idk, I guess childish-ness. Avatar was marketed as a more epic movie and if they market VoDT in the same way, instead of a cheesy 3D family film, I think it could be a good decision.

if they do VotDT in 3D, they might just be doing it becuase movies in 3D are popular.....I hope this isn't the case. Narnia isn't a 3D kind of story!

^^Idk. It might be good for the series. I would prefer it made enough money without 3D though...

I mean the only reason studios are trying this post-production 3D conversion is to try to reap the financial benefits that they think will come with it, basically due to Avatar's success. If the studios had wanted, for example, Clash of the Titans, to be a 3D movie, they would have shot the thing in 3D to begin with.

Not to turn this thread into a debate on 3D technology and Hollywood politics, but I feel that there is a disconnect between movie studios and moviegoers and even directors. Without getting into the details, you can see this to be the case with movies like All About Steve or Jennifer's Body. And now, because Avatar made so much money, they think if they make their films 3D, people will want to see them and they will also make lots of money. I'd like to think that moviegoers are smarter than that. If a movie is awful, people aren't going to see it, regardless if its in 3D or not.

I also still think that it should be up to the director. A film is essentially his or her baby, and he should be able to make the creative decision to make the movie that he wants, in 3D or not, without studio interference. The issue I have with post-production 3D conversion is that it takes the director's vision and turns it into something completely different.

Movies can obviously make money without giving in to the latest trends. Look at movies like The Dark Knight: it's the 3rd highest domestic grossing film of all time, because people recognized it was an amazing movie. I hate to say it, but the Transformers and Twilight films performed very well financially (not because they are good films; from an unbiased viewpoint they are terrible films), but they have something that delivers on what people want to see.

The thing is VoDT might not be what people want. Something with werewolf lovers would be more like it *sighs* ;)

3D never really works for me that well because I have astigmatism in both my eyes.
Liberty Hoffman wrote:the only thing that 3D would bring to VotDT is more people hearing about it. any movie that is in 3D always gets people watching it!
just my two cents.....

I agree with Liberty Hoffman though.

so it's been confirmed that VotDT was filmed digitally.....and most of the time that means that a movie is in 3D! I jus hope VotDT is an exception!

Not true actually. Although almost all 3D films are shot in digital, the majority of digital films are not 3D. If you see what i mean.

It works as a rule one way round, but not the other.

Majority of 3D Films = Digital
Majority of Digital Films = Not 3D.

VDT was shot with the same type of digital camera as was used on Public Enemies. It provides a much clearer picture, and its true that it does make conversion to 3D easier, if that route is taken, but shooting in digital versus on film is really just a stylistic preference of the DP and director, and as icarus was saying, doesn't necessarily imply anything other than that.

^slightly off-topic, but would filming in digital help make the CGI more realistic?
