Reepicheep's Song

Postby Delpheas » Nov 19, 2010 2:17 pm

Ok, I was watching the new clips and Reep's line about a dryad combined with his new voice had me thinking back to PC, and I realized that he must be pretty old if a Dryad sang it to him, as they were asleep for a long time prior to PC...

Yes, but perhaps there were one or two who still ventured out occasionally. Lewis never explained that bit.
“Not all of us can choose what we give up. The things we love are taken or are never ours at all. If we’re lucky, life is defined not by what we let go, but what we let in: friendship and kind words, frailty and hope.”

I think this is just another case of Lewis not totally thinking through what he wrote(the pirates in PC for example). It isn't that hard ofa mistake to make.

But that tune that they gave to Reepicheep's Song didn't sound like a tune that a dryad would sing. I didn't really like the tune they gave it. It was sing songy.

Or maybe he added his own tune to it- Reep can be quite...creative :)

I'm just happy it's in the movie :D

This thread is to discuss how Reepcheep could have heard his song from a dryad if they had been asleep form a thousand years, not tune.

Since the title of this thread is Reepicheep's Song, discussing the tune is OK. That's official and from a real mod. ;) :ymsmug:

I agree with the others, Lewis probably just dropped the ball on that one. It's also possible that his nurse was a part-dryad, like Dr. Cornelius was part dwarf, and that half-and-half dryads (seriously, how do I describe them?) didn't fall asleep like the full-...sapped? dryads. Or dryads woke up occasionally, just not enough for the majority of Narnians to notice. (Or, really, Lewis just messed up - he wasn't a perfectionist like Tolkien).

As for the tune, I can never carry a tune precisely how it should be without accompaniment (musical or choral) and I kinda make it up as I go along and hope it's similar. Maybe Reepicheep has the same problem? However, to answer Eustace (the Narniawebber, not the character), sing-songy is precisely how I think the song would have sounded regardless. The words are more nursery-rhymy than lullaby-y, and nursery rhymes are sing-songy as opposed to 'real' songs. If that makes sense. (I got up early this morning, my brain is kinda dead).

With that tune, Reep really should have been wearing a tuxedo and performing a little Fred Astaire dance routine.

Thank you, Bookwyrm. My thoughts exactly. =))

Yeah, I always thought of it as a prophesy-type thing, with a very...noble tune to it, more like a poem than a song. The film song was...a little wierd, really. Jarring.

As for the dryad thing...It's a prophesy. Magic happens. I am of the opinion that the Dryad just woke up in time (wakened by Aslan) to say the prophesy and then head back into hibernation for a few years.
