Ottoman Empire. After the fall of Constantinople in May, 1453 AD, the Ottoman Empire was a large region based on what is now Turkey, which spread through much of the Middle East, Northern Africa, the Caucasus, Central Asia and deep into Eastern Europe, including the Balkans, Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Transylvania and Hungary. Twice the Ottoman Empire besieged Austrian Vienna. The Ottoman Empire fell in the aftermath of WW1 (1914-1918).
