Gelibolu, the Turkish name for the town and the surrounding battlefields of Gallipoli along the European side of the Dardanelles, commemorated each year there, by the UK, Australian and New Zealander forces, in a WW1 attempt to blockade Istanbul, which, in turn, was blockading Russia's own access to the Mediterranean Sea.

Istanbul, Turkey. Once called Constantinople before 1453, it remained the capital of the Ottoman Empire, having been the capital of the previous Byzantine Empire, which succeeded what was left of the Roman Empire. Constantine the Great built Constantinople from the previous Greek-established city of Byzantium.
