Willem de Vlamingh, a Dutch sea captain & explorer who in 1697 AD not only replaced Dirk Hartog's pewter plate on Dirk Hartog Island, off the coast of Western Australia, but also found & named Rottnest Island, near Perth, where the so-called rats were actually unique marsupial Quokkas.

Dirk Hartog, another Dutch explorer, who in 1616 reached Dirk Hartog Island, in what is known as Shark Bay, in Western Australia. He left a pewter plate to mark the occasion, which is now in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
