Do not. I haven't worn mittens since I was in high school. I hardly even wear gloves. I prefer to stuff my hands in my coat pocket, and we rarely get snow, so I don't really have a reason to wear gloves.
Keep an extra flashlight in your car?

Do, as a rule. It may be necessary of a dark night if the car breaks down.

Hang on to favourite items of clothing even when they're too shabby to wear any more, just because you can't bear to throw them away?

Do, but only if the sums are fairly simple. Gone are the days of adding up long strings of numbers in my head - or long division!
Hand-wash a small load of dishes, rather than take a few days to load the dishwasher?
