My library's reopening has been postponed yet another month. But it sounds like they really are making plans on how it's going to work so I'm fairly optimistic that relief is in sight. And my church is finally going to reopen next week.

(I live in North Dakota if anyone is interested about my area.)

\:D/ Our local library reopens today! For that alone, it would make me feel so much better! The restrictions are easing in other ways also, including hairdressers, pubs, & gyms. The shops are nearly back to normal, with some of the things that were in dire short supply by the end of March now readily available.

I couldn't understand really why the library had to shut fully anyway. Our library has self-serve check-ins & outs, so that there is minimal contact between patrons & staff, plus people, as a rule, don't bunch together in libraries, being more intent on finding what they want to borrow.

Borders between states are still closed, however. Queensland & Victoria both want to keep theirs shut for a while longer.

Obviously! 8-| ;) The worldometer I have been checking up every now & then reports only seven new cases & no deaths whatever for a day or two. According to this site, 12 cases were reported in the last 24 hrs, 3 for WA, 3 for NSW & the remainder for Victoria. But NSW :ymsigh: usually gets blamed for everything. As Commissioner Bigge implied in the early 1800's, Sydney was always meant to be a penitentiary in some way or another. Like a one time NSW Minister for the Olympics, I prefer to see Sydney as a City of Redemption.

On the plus side, much of the construction around the new airport being built at Badgery's Creek, has gone full steam ahead whilst everyone is on lockdown & the roads have been relatively quiet. We even are promised that by the end of the year, a very long awaited train link from St Marys down to the new airport is to commence by the end of the year. Though I wouldn't hold my breath...

Even the eternal roadworks around here are beginning to make more sense. :D

I was able to get a hair cut yesterday which was nice. I think most of the reported cases (I think maybe some of the victoria ones are the only exception) all Australian cases in the past week have been arrivals and historic cases (no community cases). All the WA ones have been from that goat ship off Freo and Families (finally?) returning from overseas. I guess some people were unable to get on flights early or had jobs in other countries etc. Overall I am very satisfied with the way the Western Australian Government has handled the crisis. I am quite sure that it was announced the boarders of WA would be the last thing to be lifted.

Without going into any politics (I still remember some rules), I am very aware that these are very difficult times in the USA at the moment. I hope all our fellow Narniaweb Americans are safe. From the other side of the world, it all seems very scary.

If you asked me in January or February. I would have said the Australian bushfires would have been the crisis of the year.

You could be right. Especially when the Ruby Princess let a whole bunch of people to disembark before being checked thoroughly. Except that about 18 or 20 people at the Newmarch nursing home died because a nurse who unknowingly contracted COVID-19 at another hospital, brought it to Caddens, next door to Penrith, in the far West of Sydney. Many of these people were in their '90's, & probably had underlying health conditions as well. Fortunately, no new cases have been reported there since last Wednesday, as far as I know, let alone deaths.

Yes, I would agree with you on both accounts. I do hope most sincerely other NarniaWebbers are beginning to weather the COVID-19 pandemic plus any other troubles.

Even though the bushfires properly started in the last two months of last year, the aftermath is still being felt.

In today's news they have found that many of the species that are now under threat of extinction, tend to have all come from the same areas, so what will help one species will help others as well.

I have had to stop following the twitter account that posts cases because some of the responses were infuriating (as it is my professional twitter account where academics follow me I did not want to be involved in any sort of disagreement in there). Some people do not seem the grasp the difference between people returning to Australia and going into quarantine and community transferred cases. They see five new cases in say Vic or WA and act like it is a complete crisis.

I hope they do not become extinct. we have some of the most unique and interesting animals in the world and it would be such a shame. In similar news, Rottnest island has reopened (home of the smiling quokka) I plan to take a trip there in the spring. I could try my luck for a warmer winter day (these are very possible in Perth) but I would rather have some more certainty.

We have been very lucky here in Australia/New Zealand in this crisis compared to many countries.

I've been to Rottnest Island. It is really a lovely place to go to, not only for Quokkas but also for Ospreys nesting by the shoreline. There was a bit of a cafe there, where one or two of the quokkas marched in, for all the world like they own the place. Looking back at Freemantle, & Perth across the water from Rottnest Island is really wonderful, especially when we could see those places wreathed in rainbows from there, as the sun went down in the afternoon, behind us. It made that area look truly blessed. We are told we can travel regionally if we want to go on holidays, now. But WA won't let us, I fear.

We've had a cold snap here, with snow in the Australian Alps and even around Orange. But the weather is still dry near the Blue Mountains. So far the koalas have been breeding nicely in some of the wildlife parks. The newspapers like to keep us informed about the animals, & show pictures of wildlife rather than the girly pin-ups they used to show on page 3 decades ago. All the masks seem to have vanished, even when I went to the doctors this morning.

Oh, that will be nice as well. I have been wanting to go for years and had a tripped planned day the start of April that had to be cancelled for obvious reasons. I was supposed to be in Austria and then Germany towards the end of this month. A conference for my research area (self-injury and emotion regulation). I will go next year hopefully. It would have been a nice trip. Instead, I had to record my presentation over some slides. I think most people hate listening back to their own voices....but my low-tone nasal Australian voice that suddenly goes posh on random words is bad to listen back to.

I am still seeing some people in masks but not as many. I think everything has relaxed in most of Australia over the last week or two. Everyone seems to be going back to work. The roads were so much busier this morning.

A few days ago the Prime Minister here read out the basic rules for when we do lift the level to the lightest alert - which essentially returns us to normal life except for the borders being closed.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern's 10 golden rules for alert level 1

1. If you are sick stay at home; don't go to work or school or socialise. None of that changes when we lift restrictions. We do not want New Zealanders to be stoic and go into workplaces or anywhere else.

2. If you have cold or flu-like symptoms, call your doctor or health line and make sure you get tested.

3. Wash your hands, wash your hands, wash your hands.

4. Sneeze and cough into your elbow and regularly disinfect shared surfaces.

5. If you are told by health authorities to self-isolate, you must do it immediately.

6. If you are concerned about your well-being or if you have an underlying health condition, we still encourage you to work with your GP.

7. Keep track of where you have been and who you have seen to help contact tracing if needed, and we really encourage people to use the Covid tracer app as an easy way to do that.

8. Businesses should help people keep track of their movements by displaying the Ministry of Health QR Code for contact tracing.

9. Stay vigilant. There is still a global pandemic going on, people and businesses should be prepared to act fast to step up alert levels, if we have to.

10. And finally, people will have had very different experiences over the past couple of months. Whatever you are feeling, it is OK. Be kind to others and be kind to yourself.”
“Not all of us can choose what we give up. The things we love are taken or are never ours at all. If we’re lucky, life is defined not by what we let go, but what we let in: friendship and kind words, frailty and hope.”
