Aravis did not like moving at all. She meowed and howled almost nonstop for a good 24 hours. She had to spend a lot of time shut up in our utility room. It seems that when she is in a new place she meows as she is exploring. My sister and I were getting very tired of hearing her. She has adjusted fine now and seems to like the place. There is a lot of sunshine for her to sleep in.

Glad to hear she's adjusting Twigs. :)

So I'm working on getting my pets to adjust to my kiddo still. He's 10 months old today and all three of them are still pretty wary around him. I think I need to do a lot of positive reinforcement with Fiona to get her to accept him. She's doing better but if he tries to touch her, she'll quickly move away or jerk around real fast. Makes me kind of nervous. I have to admit I'm a touch disappointed as the reason we got a Newfy was because they're supposed to be excellent with kids, and she IS excellent with kids... just not babies. :P

But if anyone has any advice on how to get cats to warm up to babies, let me know. ;))

We had a cat who had taken up residence under our trailer back in 1980. Our two elder daughters were wanting a pet, and so we gave in. The girls called the cat, Tibby, since it was a female tabby cat. But then, eighteen months later, we had a third daughter. At first I was quite dismayed to have the cat near her, as she was so much bigger than my new baby. But as baby began to grow, I was more concerned how she would get on with the cat, as she started to get more mobile and inquisitive. But, unless our little girl grabbed at her, our cat just kept her distance, just like I think your cat is trying to do with your son.

If I were you I would allow pets and baby their own territory each for a while, as far as is practical. It would be even healthier to keep your son away from pets to a degree, and to keep the pets away from him, but not making a big fuss about it. If you see them all behaving as you would like them to behave, it is a good idea to praise and reward the lot of them. Baby, too.

Today I went to visit a cat at a cat shelter, who I saw advertised on their facebook page and booked to see her.
Tomorrow afternoon I am going to collect her, and will bring her home.
She is currently called Missy, but I was thinking I would like the name Polly for my new cat, and I think it suits her. Perhaps Miss Polly?

She sounds lovely, coracle. :) And the name Polly is A-1! Just watch her around Rings. ;)

How is she adjusting?

-How many pets do you have?
After losing my beloved Tierza (a gorgeous Himalayan cat) last year to kidney failure, I was pretty depressed pet-wise. But my husband and I wandered into the local shelter and as we walked past one of the cages, a little orange tabby paw shot out and snagged my husband's arm. The cage held not one, but two little tabby sisters, one orange and short-haired, one dark and long-haired, kind of like a Maine Coon. We were immediately smitten.

-What are their names, and how did you come up with them?
The orange tabby is Seneca, after a street in our town that we drive on a lot, and it just seemed to fit. The long-haired tabby is Vesper, after Vesper Lynd, the Bond girl in "Casino Royale," because she's feisty and elegant.

-What are some funny things that your pets do?
Vesper thinks she's a dog. She fetches. I've never seen a cat fetch. I have a kitty fishing pole with a burlap fish on the end - I cast it out, she runs after it, picks it up with her teeth and brings it back to my lap, where she drops it and waits for me to cast it again. Seneca has already figured out that the humans are responsible for the "mysterious red dot" (i.e., the laser pointer) and gets very animated when we take it out of the drawer.

fantasia_kitty, honestly I would just keep a close eye and take things slow... right now just get your animals and baby comfortable with being around each other and as wagga said praise them when they're being good...

Tough times with come as he gets older... he'll want to pick things up and pet them, but kid's don't learn how to do it right right away... it's nice with a dog or cat in a way in that they're not as fragile or uninclined to handling as some animals (for example rabbits and young kids are a big no-no :P ) It also may be good that he's being raised with animals already in the house... this takes away from the newness- excitement... basically as he gets older try not to let him pull on their fur and try to teach him how to pet an animal... also make sure you always keep them supervised :) But for right now, I'd just let Fiona and the cats sniff him and get comfortable with his presence and the noise :)

Tierza Two of our three cats have noticed the laser pointer, too... Nosey doesn't play with it as much so I think he's still oblivious... Fluffy (my rabbit) I don't think she can even see the light she hasn't reacted to it (I should get a blue one and see if she will then XD) I've noticed though Fluffy's not one for object play like Patchy was... she does a LOT more running around and exploring though.

Little One is very smart... when he wants to go out sometimes he tries to reach the door knob... unfortunately he can't turn it, but I'm pretty sure he knows what it does. Whitey has figured our she can nudge doors open with her nose... except she REFUSES to do it with the porch door... she always waits for me to open it enough to let her in... I don't know if it's cause she doesn't know she can (usually it's closed) or if she wants permission... Patchy also was smart with doors... he used to purposely close the door on his cage to show me he didn't want to go back in... or nudge the handle's if he wanted out... he'd nudge the porch door open too... (except I didn't want him too... -_- )

fantasia_kitty, when we were small, we had several cats, one following the other, and at first the cats didn't care for us at all, but with time, we warmed up to each other (except for Mursik, who never liked any of us, save my older brother and sister, and we quickly learned to steer clear of him if we didn't want to end up with a scratched face.) I think it's just a matter of letting the cats get used to the baby themselves

Tierza, so sorry about the loss of your cat :ymhug: your new kittens sound like they are really cute, we had a kitten once, who also thought he was dog and behaved so funny :p (he was also cross-eyed, and would run diagonally because of that, it was really funny to watch him)

Tierza wrote: Seneca has already figured out that the humans are responsible for the "mysterious red dot" (i.e., the laser pointer) and gets very animated when we take it out of the drawer.

my bird Robin just doesn't get the laser pointer, whenever the red dot shines, he just stares at it as though it is a great evil and something he must avoid. He'll run away from it if it's too close to him

or maybe she just feels that royalty mustn't have to open doors, so she waits for the attendants to open them for her :p :)

We renamed our male guinea pig again (or I renamed him, a long while back) and now he's Jean (Rocky just didn't flow easily in Russian and it was hard pronouncing his name). Jean has really grown since we got him and he's such a messy critter. He purposly lets the water flow out of his water bottle, then his cage gets all wet and smelly and then he climbs up on his little house and loudly complains to me. I'm really not used to this as Lucy is a very clean guinea pig, she's always neat and proper, but Jean is a handful. I can barely manage to keep up his care, I have to clean the cage twice a week (but at least he isn't picky when it comes to food and will eat just about anything, except for bell peppers :p ) Lucy is also a lazy princess, but Jean is active and constantly jumping around the cage, he's really very funny, but has a difficult personality. My brother in law and him just don't get along at all :p (I'll post pictures of him soon :) )

had to dig waaaaay down deep to find this ;))

My parakeet has gotten sick with something it seems, he's taken to sleeping al the time and is obviously very weak. :( I don't know what is wrong with him and I can't take him to a vet because #1 I'm sick and #2 it's -15C outside and I don't want to risk him catching a cold! So I don't know what to and am hoping maybe he'll pick up on his own.

Jean REALLY needs a bigger cage! He's growing so fast ;)) I'm hoping to get him a new one thi summer :) One with lots of space so he can run around in it.

Well, I have one pet currently, Edmund Skandar Francois. He is a lovely Airdale Terrier. I named him after Ed Pevensie.
He is such a sweet pup!
Unfortunately, my little black bunny Marie Antoinette died last month.....still really upset:( Anyway, I treasured my time with her.

I'll try to post a pic of little Edmund one of these days.
Til then.

Presenting my adorable Airdale Terrier pup Edmund Alexander Francois

oops, looks like I stuffed up that last image! I am so bad with computers! Let me try again.........

I'm pet sitting for my cousin and his wife. They have two fluffy doodles. Both at or near a year and a half old. Still totally in the puppy stage. It's July 4th and I live in an area where fireworks are going gangbusters.

Not a PEEP out of the fluffy ones! I went out to put them in the kennel for the night and they greeted me the same as if it was daylight and no fireworks. Zero panic. They just fussed because I was leaving them before they'd had enough attention. lol.

I am getting a new bunny!! I really wanted to name her after a Narnian character but my mom dislikes Susan, Lasaraleen, Aravis and Polly. I don't like the names Jill or Jadis for a rabbit. I like Lucy, but I'm not so keen on Lucille. Lucinda maybe? Ideas anyone?

Awww, if you ever get any pictures of those puppies, starkat, you should post them!

Congratulations on your new bunny, EmpressJadis! That's very exciting! :D

How about Moonwood? When Jewel was telling Jill about all the old Narnian stories in The Last Battle, he mentioned a legendary hare named Moonwood who "had such ears that he could sit by Caldron Pool under the thunder of the great waterfall and hear what men spoke in whispers at Cair Paravel." Of course, it's a male character, but Moonwood doesn't seem like a particularly masculine name, either. Another hare that appears in CoN is named Camillo; he shows up in Prince Caspian. (Camilla, perhaps?)

Other female Narnian names I can think of are:

1. Helen, the first queen of Narnia.
2. Swanwhite, a Narnian queen said to be so beautiful that whenever she would look into a forest pool, her reflection would shine back for a year and a day.
3. Alambil, a star in the Narnian heavens known as the Lady of Peace.
4. Clipsie, the daughter of the leader of the Dufflepuds.
5. Gwendolen, a schoolgirl who decides to follow Aslan in Prince Caspian.

Thank You Rose! Those are some fab suggestions! I particularly love Moonwood and Clipsie! Actually, Clipsie sounds like the name of a pony. Maybe if I get I pony I'll call her Clipsie. Anywho, thanks so much!

You are very welcome; I'm so glad you like that name! :D Clipsie might be the cutest pony name ever. I thoroughly approve of this idea. ;))

Just realized that I never posted in regards to my pets... or lack thereof. ;)) I've actually never had any pets. Not exactly sure how I've survived, but Japanese cat videos have helped ease the pain. :P It's not the end of the world because I live in an apartment at the moment and barely have enough room as it is, but if I ever move... I reeeally want a cat and/or a dog. ;))

When you don't have them, you wish you did, and when you do...

As the saying goes, "Three dogs is three too many." Our three are nice enough, and though we threaten to get rid of them, it's doubtful that it will ever happen. The one cat who has survived the coyotes is not tame at all; there is one place in the yard where I can touch her, if all the stars align.

I guess it depends on the pets, how large they are, how cute, how obedient, etc. I've always pined after an elephant, but the forage bill would be considerable--definitely not an apartment pet, eh Rosie?
