Wow, the places ya'll go. @
narnian: Washington / Idaho to Miami?! I've been to all three places, but never in one trip!
I just came back from a week-long vacation to New York and New England. I loved most of it, except for heat, traffic, and one missed ferry.
Guess what? I sailed up the Thames River on a ferry last week. But I wasn't in London, England. I was in New London, Connecticut!
Suggestion: if you want to take a passenger ferry to Martha's Vineyard, don't use the Quonset Point, Rhode Island route! The Quonset ferry dock is on an Air Force base. And we happened to schedule a 1pm ferry for the same weekend as the yearly air show.
But guess what? No one at the ferry service, both when we asked for info and when we made a reservation, told us about the air show or about leaving an hour early to make the ferry. They also charged hidden fees not on their brochure.
We thought we were gonna make the ferry. But the MPs took over the heavy traffic for the air show and wouldn't let us through. So we missed it. We were angry, feeling like we'd been lied to and cheated, but they gave us a refund. We then took a 4pm [hour-long] passenger ferry from New Bedford, Mass. They had much better service, and were friendlier and cheaper -- with no hidden fees.
