Bella, I sure hope you get some snow too before the winter starts dying down. Of course, that's a ways away yet.

You said it, Glimmie!
;))

DiGs wrote:It's become very cold here! This morning when I left for class, it was a chilly 16 degrees.

My first reaction was that you've really changed because 16° isn't that cold. I was totally thinking Celsius. :P

IlF wrote:How about we get the average of our two temperatures and than we would have decent weather.

Not a bad idea, IlF. ;)) Could you arrange that please? ;)

Indeed, stargazer, the cold has come our way. Saturday, as predicted, was mild for January, but on Sunday a massive cold front arrived, bringing with it daytime wind chills of -25C/-13F and below, accompanied by frigid nighttime hours. However, I'd much rather it like this than +25C/77F and above. :P

And last night, the skies surprised us by clearing for a spectacular view of the conjunction of the Moon and Jupiter. :D 'Twas very, very cold outside, though (ditto the pins-and-needles when you breathe deeply!), and I even had to don a warm sweater and mittens for the duration of my time outside. ;))

The Arctic air should be remaining with us the rest of this week. We have a skiffling of snow on the ground, but long gone are our high banks from a few weeks ago (from the Boxing Day storm). :( Snow should be falling off and on towards the end of the week, so I'm really hoping that comes to pass and we get some lovely accumulation again.

EDIT: The strong wind that brought us the cold air also knocked down portions of one of our side wooden fences very early Sunday morning, taking a few of my trellises with it. /:) Right smack on part of my perennial garden. :P Ah well, all it did was crush the brittle old stems of plants, but the roots should still be fine buried deep within the ground.

That's so irritating when fences collapse. We had that happen to one of our fences a few years ago (thankfully we did not have Fiona at the time or I'm sure she would have gone on a grand adventure). Did you get it repaired Jo?

Well we're having some extreme Kansas temperature swings this week, and I expect that the rest of the midwest will be as well. Tomorrow's high is supposed to be about 73F, with significant decreases in temps until Thursday when our high is supposed to be 39F. I guess that's not as extreme as we sometimes get... that occasionally happens a day apart.

Still hoping for a major cold front to move through to keep it cold for a while or else this spring is going to be... interesting.

Oh, we did get some much needed rain last night. :D I don't think we got a lot, but every little bit helps!

We have colorbond fences that last longer and look better than wooden fences. I don't know how they would measure up to snow storms, though. The last time we had a wooden fence our cat and dog conspired with the next door dog to demolish it. In Europe they don't seem to have fences at all.

Victoria, which is "South of the border, Down Mexico Way", is still getting bushfires and had a heatwave last week that we largely missed. But now, thanks to Cyclone Oswald, Brisbane is bracing itself for floods, after a fairly dry summer. There is serious flooding in Northern New South Wales and Sydney is also to be affected by heavy rain. But the maximum temperature is more like 23C. It is as if we are having our "droughts and flooding rains" all in the same month. :-\ Even in the same week.

I'd be a bit careful of IlF's idea. We might get more than we bargain for. :-o

I saw those predicted highs for your area, fantasia. Amazing!

No such heat here...today was warm enough at around 34F/1C. It's a skating rink outside here in southern Minnesota, with up to a half-inch of freezing rain coating everything and giving the outdoors a shiny appearance. Fortunately the trees in the immediate area are small so we don't have large branches or trunks falling.
But all night, Aslan and the Moon gazed upon each other with joyful and unblinking eyes.

So did we, this past weekend and this morning. :) Only about 1" in all but that's still helpful.

Now that the clouds are leaving we should be getting back to freezing or near freezing temperatures starting tonight. B-)

Me and my big mouth. ;)) On our travels today we discovered much of the north end of town (some 2700 customers) was without power today thanks to trees falling under the weight of the ice. This included a shopping center, the high school and one elementary school, other businesses and homes.

More freezing rain is expected overnight tonight.

fk wrote:Did you get [the fence] repaired Jo?

Temporarily. :P The ground is quite frozen now, so to do a proper job, Dennis will have to wait until early spring. However, the fence is 40+ years old, so it doesn't owe us anything. But we are going to repair it rather than get a new one because it has a fair bit of character and stories in its wood. ;))

Glad you received some rain at least, fantasia and Glimmie! But, stargazer, that is quite the ice storm! Take care. And that is quite the extreme weather in parts of Australia, wagga, wow!

And 73°, whoowhee, fk, that's getting up there. I should talk, though, because from our nearly -30C/-22F temperatures of last week, we're heading up to an unbelievable 14C/57.2F on Wednesday. :-o This will definitely set a record.

We had a lovely snowfall last night—so light and fluffy—but early this morning as the temperatures started rising, freezing rain blew through our area, and then fog rolled in as the air rose to just above freezing. Now that snow is beginning to melt and everything is slushy-mushy. Tomorrow is fog and rain, reaching that balmy high on Wednesday. Thursday, thankfully, is dropping again to a more seasonable feel, around -5C/23F. That should be lasting over the weekend, with flurries and maybe even some snow accumulation. :)

This winter, 'though we've surely had more snow than last winter, has been a very up-and-down season. However, any warmer spells are short-lived as cold air moves in and snow falls again, as it should this time of year.

Boy the weatherpeople sure missed today! It was supposed to be sunny, 60F, and windy. Instead I woke up to rain this morning and it has been dark and dreary ever since, much cooler too. :P (The cold front came through earlier than anticipated ;) ) There's a possibility for some snow tonight. Should be interesting to see if we get any. But even if we do, it's not cold enough for it to stick.

What a difference from the anticipated forecast, fk! And I saw elsewhere that you received a thin covering of snow, whereas we had heavy rainfall overnight, with thunderstorms in some areas. The low last night was 10C/50F, but here in January it should be more like -25C/-13F, if not colder. Today, as expected, we have warm temperatures, reaching 14C/57.2F. :-o This is certainly a record for today, the last one being 9C/48.2F set in 2006.

Tomorrow, however, winter makes a comeback, as it should this time of year. Flurries are expected for the next week, with temperatures remaining below 0, hovering around -5C/23F for the daytime hours. :) Just hoping we receive another few snowstorms before spring starts arriving. There is quite good chance of this, as we can get snow into May. Not common, but it's a possibility. My girlfriend's wedding anniversary is May 8, and it snowed that day 30 years ago.

After a rather draining night, during which the weather radio went off at least 6 times and I got about 4-5 hours of sleep. I had to go outside and get wet putting the cover on the hot tub because the two people in the hot tub wait 5 minutes too long before getting out and so it started raining. 8-| However it is a very nice rain, so I'm thinking about going out on the front porch and drinking something hot while watching the rain. :)

It's suppose to rain this evening and snow tomorrow. Should be interesting weather. Especially if we go to the library tomorrow.

Today's high: 64 degrees
Tomorrow's high: 21 degrees.

Do I really need to say anymore than that? Blimey what a change!

The wind's been howling all evening, and the rain's been falling. Methinks it might turn to snow tomorrow.

Well the weatherpeople missed big time today (again ;)) ). I don't remember what it was supposed to be, but I'm thinking they said sunny and there was never any mention of snow anywhere. I'm in my kiddo's room changing his diaper and I look up and snow is coming down in large quantities. I bet we got an inch of snow out there! It won't stick around, it's a little too warm, but that was a pleasant surprise. :) (We need all the moisture we can get!)

Yesterday was in the mid-high 50's slightly breezy and various kinds of precipitation...

Today was in the mid-low 30's, with high winds (really high winds), a slight bit of snow (ie not enough to stick), cloudy, and patches of sun...

Typical crazy college weather... waves are high today.

Yes, it does. I forgot we were having tornadoes as well, but we did. Yesterday the weather was hot and steamy, and probably will be the same today. They say we will get rain by Sunday. Another month of fhis sort of weather ahead. :ymsigh:

Isn't this the time of year when that groundhog (Punxatawney-sp?) predicts the spring in USA?

That sounds so lovely and peaceful, SnowAngel! :)

Yep, DiGs, that is very similar to us here. What a drastic change. It's been fun seeing that cold, arctic front move in. The winds have been wild, the air brisk and cold, the lake-effect squalls very heavy, and the billowing clouds utterly stunning. It was a very adventurous and fun weather day, to be sure. One of my favourite kinds with everything I love: wind, snow, clouds. :D

:-o IloveFauns, those are quite the contrasts!

fantasia wrote:I look up and snow is coming down in large quantities. I bet we got an inch of snow out there!

Niiiiice! :D Aside from the beauty, I'm sure glad you're getting some of that needed precipitation.

Yeah, wolf, weren't the winds tremendous today?! In fact, I mentioned how the high wind the other day blew down a couple of sections of our old fence. Well, my hubby had quickly propped it up ... but only one side. Today it blew down the other way. :)) Thankfully, our neighbour is a very good sport, and we were all just laughing about it. ;))

Here in Ontario, Canada, wagga, our groundhog mascot is Wiarton Willie. I'm sure hoping he will see his shadow so we'll have some good weeks of winter left. :D

Awesome EDIT: Just listened to the five-day forecast, and we're continuing nice 'n cold here, with snow squalls/heavy flurries every day, and snow falling much of the day on Sunday. Now, this is winter! ♥
