Everyone wants to talk weather part 2

Well Ladies and Gents, it's winter once again. I'm enjoying the winter for now since it's only just started, but I think after new years, I'll already be tired of it!

It's been SO very cold here this past week, I'm actually not going to complain that the weather prediction for Christmas changed from us having a white Christmas, to having a rainy Christmas. I'll take that 48 degrees!

Winter has indeed arrived! Temperatures will struggle to reach 0F (-17C) here the next few days, even with the sun out, and wind chills will be well below that. Nighttime lows may be around -10F/-23C. Nothing record-setting; this is Minnesota in January, but a bit chilly after our pleasant extended autumn. Now if we could just get that ice off the highways... (salt loses much of its effectiveness at these temps).

Now that sort of daytime maximum is definitely cold. Down here we have had several heat waves, with one due after tomorrow, maybe reaching 37C. But we have also had a little rain, dragged down from the monsoon weather Darwin and Northern Queensland have had for the past month or so. It also seems the further south one goes the hotter it is. Perth, Melbourne and Adelaide, in particular, have had some very extreme weather. Temperatures north of here, beyond Brisbane, and the Tropic of Capricorn, can be surprisingly mild.

Tomorrow and Wednesday we are getting a reprieve from the cold. The temps are very nice: 59F and 63F respectively.
Buuuuut... Thursday a cold front comes through and Friday is showing 60% chance of freezing rain. Saturday has 50% chance of freezing rain. Sunday has 50% chance of freezing rain. I HATE freezing rain, it is the worst weather imho.

Agreed about the freezing rain, fantasia. We had some of that the other night, and it took me about 20 minutes to get into my car and scrape all the ice off the windows (and that was with both front and rear defrosters running). But I wanted to clear it off before the colder weather (-12F/-25C) hits tomorrow night.

Between the ice and cold (salt doesn't work at this temperature) and high winds, some freeways around here were skating rinks yesterday.

But in 6 months it will be at least 100F/55C warmer. Ugh.

That would be just about right. We had a very hot day last Wednesday with a maximum of 41C. We had one day of relatively mild temperatures yesterday, and today we are expecting a maximum of 43C/110F. Enjoy the cold while you have it. However, I doubt you would get a gain at any time of 55C which would be off the temperature gauge. The thermometer we have up in this room says 50C = 120F

EDIT: 6.44pm ADST 13/1/2017. The maximum today was 45C/112.5F, and it won't be much better tomorrow @ 38C. Not much relief tonight either.

That's hot, wagga! We will get a "day or few" of 42C per summer, which serves to warm the river enough to make it pleasant to swim in. The nights are the worst, though. You hope it will cool off, and it just won't. Go to bed sweating, wake up sweating! Ugh! Can't expect much else when you live on the edge of a desert zone, I suppose.

We're in the midst of a cold spell: -20C with wind. Hopefully it will moderate; the weather "fore-guessers" predict rain for later in the week, followed by more cold and snow. Please make up your minds! We got spoilt by a couple of super mild winters, so I guess it's time for a cold one.

I wouldn't mind sharing some warmer air for a bit. Our ice storm is supposed to roll in about 4pm today. We're predicted to get somewhere between 1/4-1/2" of ice. But my family just to the northwest is predicted to get 1/2-1". :S That's a lot of ice and can cause a lot of damage. So we'll see what happens over the next few days. Even though Sunday is supposed to get up to 38F, it's going to cool back off in the evening with more ice falling. Monday should be back to normal. Here's hoping we don't lose power!

I'm sure stargazer and johobbit would laugh at our definition of "winter storm" but anyways... This sort of thing is rare in Kansas.

Haha, but no, I'll restrain myself. Seriously, it is always interesting hearing about weather rarities in different areas.

mm, good to see you here again. So, did you get your rainy Christmas?

We had a white Christmas. So happy about that. Our entire December was quite snowy. But since December 25th, we've had melting, then freezing, then more snow, then rain, then snow, and again. Right now, we're in a comfortably cold spell (great for walking in), but much of the snow has gone with the rain the past couple of days. It could be up to 10C/50F at one point next week! This is January, for Pete's sake! Bring on the snow!

But in 6 months it will be at least 100F/55C warmer. Ugh.

Yikes, stay safe in that ice storm this weekend, fantasia. While it can be so picturesque, a storm like that can be so serious and dangerous. Take good care! Guess lots of people in your area are hunkering down for the weekend.

45C is almost beyond my imagination. Glad such temperatures are unheard of here (except with the heat index).

The small towns of Cotton and Embarrass, in northeast Minnesota, had the lowest temperature in the Lower 48 US states this morning (-42F/C). That's a bit chilly but almost easier for me to imagine than 45C. Our temperatures here in the southern part of the state were much warmer than that, but still below 0F/-17C. It will be around freezing late this weekend as we're on the northern edge of that big ice storm that may paralyze the center of the US.

I'm almost too embarrassed to say to that Minnesotan town, Embarrass, that today our maximum was 45.1C, with an overnight minimum of over 30C, and 38C by 9.00AM. We, in Western Sydney, even outclassed such superhot Western NSW towns like Dubbo (41C), or even Bourke and Broken Hill. Most days this week, so far, including last Friday, have been 38C or over, in what would be called an Extreme Event. Yet, conditions in the Southern Pacific are supposed to be neutral. Maybe it is the El Nino we have when we are not having an El Nino?

Yay for snow in the mountains! Just wish it were here. This is the mildest January we have had in years, probably decades. Our December was more like our typical January—cold with lots of snow. The past week we have had much rain and mild temperatures, as in a few degrees above freezing. It's far too warm for this time of year. And very, very dreary. I don't mind this weather in April, but not early in the New Year! We're missing the snow and wintry weather a lot.

This raw, soaking dampness feels colder than a good, crisp -10C with no moisture!

Well, that is the usual pattern for our summers except during an El Nino. But increasingly we are getting summers, including this January, where the "day or few" is considerably more than that. We are expecting a maximum of 42C next Tuesday.

It's warming up here too, which is a good thing after the ice storm this weekend. Temperatures may get up to a blistering 40F/4C this week with several days of rain in the forecast. Rain? Here? In January? Amazing (especially since statistically this is the coldest week of the year).

The Celsius system of measuring temperatures goes from 0C to 100C which is the boiling point of water. I don't know what the boiling point of water is in the Fahrenheit system, having forgotten it after so many years of Centigrade/Celsius. 0 degrees Celsius is the freezing point of water, which is 32 degrees Fahrenheit. In atmospheric temperatures above 0C you won't get snow, and any precipitation will be rain. The same happens even below 0C, depending on sea level and the sort of moisture in the air.

Bodily temperature is 96.something or other Fahrenheit which is about 35 Celsius.

Winter isn't done yet. Up to 8 inches (200mm) of wet, heavy snow is on the way over the next 36 hours.

(My surprise in the earlier post is that it should even think about raining here in January since the average high right now is -4C and usually it's colder than that. )
