HUGE plothole in books!
My sister, my friend, and I were listening to the FotF audio dramas and my sister pointed out that in VODT, Reepicheep says the song was sung over him by a dryad but if it was, he must be really old because the dryads were asleep in PC! The timeline doesn't add up! How could a dryad sing a song over him if it was "dead"?

I've noticed that before. The answer is: I don't know. We can only hope that it's one of the things C.S.Lewis was going to correct in the revisions that he was planning.

Wow, very good point. Perhaps the dryad sort of came un-asleep, or maybe it sung to him in a dream or something.

That is a very good point. Maybe their was a time when the dryads were un-asleep in the most remotest parts of Narnia and were asleep in the inhabited parts. Reepicheep was born in that time period. Maybe afterward the Telmarines started pressing further into the unknown regions and silenced the dryads all together.

Yeah those are all possibilities. It's just kinda wierd the Lewis would leave a gap like that.

I never thought of this case as a gap in the storyline. I just always assumed that the dryad came to Reepicheep in a dream. In PC, when Lucy sees the dryads in the night, she recalls it as being very dreamlike. Suppose this is more of the same. Aslan works in mysterious ways. He knew Reepicheep needed to know this information, as part of his life's destiny, so he sent one of his servants, a dryad, to relay the message.

I never thought about that at all...
I'd like to think that if Reepicheep said it was a dryad, it was a dryad. If it had been a dream he probably would have mentioned it becuase magical/prophetical dreams are quite glorious, I think.
So...maybe it was, er, a very resilient dryad, one of the last to retreat within herself...or maybe Aslan just woke her up.

Ah yes, I posted a thread about that a long time ago. I just thought either Lewis forgot, therefore, a plot hole. Or, that Aslan let that Dryad be awake so that she could sing that song to him and it would tie in with his future.

I think that Aslan bringing the dryad awake for this one moment makes the most sense and is highly plausible. Lewis may have forgotten, but that covers the problem for me, if it is a problem.

I have often wondered about this. I figured maybe she (dryads are females right?) was a little rebellious and didn't go to sleep. Maybe Aslan appeared to the dryad in a dream (since they are sleeping it would make since they were dreaming too) so she woke up to bring Reep his prophecy. The trees seem to be able to still do somethings in their sleep. It is implied that they caused problems for Caspian in his escape.

I had thought of this before too.
Maybe not all of the dryads were asleep until Miraz took over. Dr. Cornelius says that Caspian IX was a good king, so maybe there were still some around. Aside from this, I do wonder how long talking mice live.

hullo, ya'll! I am the 'friend' Glenstorm The Great mentioned in the first post of this topic!
ya'll have some great theorys as to what this glitch in VotDT might mean! it is so strange that Lewis would make a big thing about the nyads and dryads being asleep, and then make an exeption. but oh well! it still weirds me out to think about now that i've noticed it, but every author makes a mistake from time to time. so I won't worry about it!

Maybe a dryad managed to survive and come out of the spell and sing to him.
It is a possibility after all.
