2. Well might I ask! No less than eight Dutch explorers visited Australia between 1606 and 1697 AD, including Abel Tasman, who, in 1642 & 1644, explored both Tasmania and New Zealand. There was also the shipwreck and mutiny of the Batavia in 1629. But because the Dutch were traders, looking for better routes to the Spice Islands, they were not interested in claiming and settling countries whose inhabitants could not tell them anything about precious metals and spices.

Re: Three Questions
2. The Commonwealth Building used to be known as the Equitable Building; the reason for the name change is unclear, but it likely has to do with the name of a company that either bought or renovated the building just like the original name reflected the company that was first in the building. It is also relatively much closer to the Commonwealth of Canada, and commonwealth could additionally refer to a town founded for betterment of a community (which would probably be why a company would have Commonwealth in their name).

Re: Three Questions
2. WHY is baseball considered a true American sport?
Because baseball is the best sport ever. In all seriousness, there's a lot of nuances to it. For one thing, it's arguably the oldest sport America has, and it was extremely popular about 20 years ago, though some argue (probably rightly) that football has over taken it. Some say that baseball is America's sport because of its focus on equality and teamwork, its "American ideals." Mostly, though, it's because it was the most popular sport when the nation was younger, so it has kind of has first-born rights.

2. WHY is soccer so popular? Soccer is the sort of popular football code not confined to a particular nation or particular locality, unlike Australian Rules, played from Western Australia (formerly known as New Holland) to Victoria, but not in NZ, NSW or QLD. It has the biggest following of any sport with a prestigious and International competition to promote it. It is also a sport which has brought considerable glory to otherwise little-known Latin American countries as well as European ones like Spain and Italy. Soccer is also very popular within UK and Australia, whose International team is called the Socceroos.
