Because they have agoraphobia and need to see everything around them in order to feel secure.

Why do we put salt into sweet things?

Because salt looks like sugar and we've forgotten our glasses.

Because there's something intriguing about a world which is just on the edge of civilization--where just about anything can happen, and if our hero wants law and order and justice, he has to fight for it. :)

Why do people so often talk about the weather?

People like to talk about the weather because as it annoys everyone, it can be discussed politely, deflecting controversial topics or intrusive personal histories.

It's because of the Last Supper, taking place so shortly before the Crucifixion. It took place on a Friday, and there were 13 men present--Jesus and the 12 disciples. Combine the two and, for some people, that's unlucky.

Why do movies and TV shows almost always shove in an unnecessary romance? /:)

Because some people think it'll make the show more popular.

They remind us of all of the B- grades we got in school and so we feel a sense of community with them.

Odd you should ask that, because Down Under it would grow on the south side of trees, that is to say, the shady side.

Why do people associate going north with colder and less clement weather?

Because in the northern hemisphere, going north means getting farther and farther from the Equator. And sometimes, those of us in the northern hemisphere forget that this isn't true all around the world. ;))

First, take a very large tape measure...

Why do walnut trees produce walnuts, but oak trees produce acorns?

English is a combination of Danish with the original Anglo-Saxon, mixed thoroughly with Old French, spoken after 1066 by anyone in England who mattered, and studded with Latin, Greek and even some Celtic words. Seasoned with loan words from all around the world, it is no wonder that the seeds of Olde English Oak trees are called acorns, or maybe oakings, and walnuts are actually from walnut trees. ;)

What is notable about the calendar dates 31st July-1st August, apart from the end of our local NarniaWeb competition?

It's the only time (within a single year) that a month switches over to another month which has the same number of days.
[Sorry if you were referring to something else; that was the only thing I could think of. :ymblushing:]

Why does it only seem to rain when you're having a picnic or some other outdoor event, and not when you're going to have to water the garden if it doesn't rain? ;))

Don't you know that the best rain dances of them all are to wash your car, hold a picnic or barbecue or organise a game of golf? That way the rain will want to come to the party. :D

When will be the next blue moon?
