3. WHY did the United States decide to send men to the moon?

Largely, it was due to Cold War embarrassment: the Soviets had launched Sputnik in 1957, and Yuri Gagarin orbited earth in April 1961, before American astronaut Alan Shephard took his suborbital flight in May 1961.

To quote President Kennedy on May 25, 1961 (just weeks after Shephard became the first American in space):

First, I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the earth. No single space project in this period will be more impressive to mankind, or more important for the long-range exploration of space; and none will be so difficult or expensive to accomplish.


In his famous speech at Houston's Rice University in September 1962, he adds that it's because it is hard, not easy:

We choose to go to the moon. We choose to go to the moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard, because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one which we intend to win, and the others, too.
