[Lady Arwen]

“If you’re meaning in general, there’s about fifty folks around. Or something like that. I don’t keep close track of hands that aren’t mine.”

[MountainFireflower]

“Fifty? Is this a camp or something? Why are fifty people gathered? That’s what I’m asking.”

[Lady Arwen]

“Oh, I don’t know, might have to do with that little upset down by the track that included a run in with one of the West’s largest gangs. And a faulty shot. Never known the Marshal to have to use two bullets to kill a man she wanted dead.”

[MountainFireflower]

“Oh.” She paused, wriggling her wrists around. The bindings were starting to irritate her. “Sarcasm noted. Now you can untie me.”

[Lady Arwen]

“Why? So you can run and I either have to chase you, doctor you, or explain to the Marshal that you were an idiot? I ain’t payin’ for your funeral, kid.”

[MountainFireflower]

“What else am I supposed to do, sit around? I don’t even know what’s out there, except a bunch of people, which sounds like a whole lot of nothing to do. I could explore, but that’s clearly forbidden.”

[Lady Arwen]

“Yeah, you’re pretty much stuck. So sitting around is pretty much it.”

[MountainFireflower]

“Mister whoever-you-are, I don’t think I’ve sat around in probably about fourteen years.”

[Lady Arwen]

“What do you propose to do, then?”

[MountainFireflower]

“Sleep, I guess. After that all bets are off.”

[Lady Arwen]

“You can sleep like that, then.” Daniel nodded at her, then stood and placed the chair back where it belonged. “Goodnight.”

[MountainFireflower]

“That’s not...I’d prefer to be untied. If I’m supposed to sleep well anyway.” She shook her head. “Goodnight, then, I guess.”

[Lady Arwen]

“You’re not. You’re supposed to stay alive. There’s a difference,” Daniel said as he pushed the flap of the tent aside and stepped out. His shadow lingered on the edge of the tent for a while, then vanished completely. He was gone.

Charlotte struggled with her tied wrists for a few minutes before giving up. She let out a grunt of frustration, then laid back on the grass. She thought for a while about the conversation, and all the details swirling in her mind. But eventually exhaustion gave in, and she fell asleep again.

“So who’s the girl?” Abigail asked, ambushing Daniel nearly as soon as he exited the tent.

[Lady Arwen]

“Nobody,” Daniel said as he gently put his hand on Abby’s elbow and guided her away to a more secluded area. After glancing around, he looked back at Abby. “Kid shouldn’t be here. She’s...it’s a long story. Let’s just say I’ve been keeping my eye on her and what’s left of her family for longer than she can remember.”
